Greetings!

On behalf of the “Illustrious” Iota Lambda Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, it is my honor and pleasure to warmly welcome you to our website. We are thrilled that you have taken the time to visit our website and learn more about our beloved organization.

On January 15, 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became the first Greek-lettered organization established in the United States by Black women, for Black women. Led by our visionary, Ethel Hedgemon Lyle, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on the campus of Howard University – located in Washington, DC – by our Twenty Pearls.  After its incorporation as an everlasting body on January 29, 1913, our sorority has become the instrument through which, determined college-trained women have set to uphold and encourage the purpose and traditions of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, to promote unity and friendship among college women, to study and help alleviate problems concerning girls and women in order to improve their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in college life, and to be of service to all mankind.

Since its inception on the campus of The University of Florida on May 17, 1975, the Iota Lambda Chapter has remained devoted to the noble purpose, and ideals that serve as the foundation of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. For over 40 years, Iota Lambda has unceasingly served the greater Gainesville community, excelled in scholarship, and strengthened relations among all women. We strive for excellence by using the bonds of sisterhood, scholarship, and service to enrich the college experience and impact the community in and around the campus through programs of service. Iota Lambda has initiated many programs on campus and the community, including Pink Goes Red for Heart Health, Setting U ofF Right, Green Gainesville- Road Cleanups, and Pretty Fit for Women’s Health.

We sincerely appreciate your visit to our chapter’s website and encourage you to support our programs and service events, and explore the long lasting history of our beloved sisterhood. We hope that you will come again!

Sincerely,
